Terms.

Last updated 9 May 2026.

Using speakeasy means you accept these terms. They're as short as we could make them and still cover what we need to.

Alpha software. Speakeasy is in active alpha development. The app may break. Messages may fail to deliver. Calls may drop. Use it for what you can afford to lose. Real-deal trust comes when we exit alpha — until then, treat it as a preview.

1. Who can use it

2. Your account

Your handle is yours as long as you have the device that enrolled it. If you uninstall, lose the device, or wipe its keystore, that handle is gone — there's no recovery flow because we have nothing to recover from. Pick a memorable one.

If a handle becomes available again because the previous holder abandoned it, the next person who claims it is them. Don't expect your handle to wait for you forever.

3. What you can't do

Because we can't read messages, we can't pre-screen them. Recipients can block and report. We act on credible reports of accounts being used for prohibited content — same as any messenger.

4. Messages and content

Anything you send through speakeasy belongs to you. We have no claim on it, no use of it, no copy of it after delivery.

The recipient gets a copy when they receive it. They can screenshot. They can quote. They can repeat what you said. End-to-end encryption isn't a guarantee of secrecy from the person you're sending to — it's a guarantee that nobody else sees it.

5. Paid avatars

Paid avatars are non-consumable in-app purchases through the App Store (iOS) or Google Play (Android). Refund requests go through Apple or Google, per their respective policies. We can't refund a purchase made through the platform stores ourselves.

A purchased avatar is tied to your platform account, not your speakeasy handle. If you switch platforms (iOS → Android or vice versa), the entitlement does not transfer.

6. The app is provided as-is

To the maximum extent permitted by law, speakeasy is provided "as-is" without warranty of any kind. We don't promise that messages will always deliver, that calls will always connect, or that the server will always be up. We do commit to the security properties documented at /privacy — those aren't best-effort.

7. Liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, our liability for any claim arising from your use of speakeasy is capped at the greater of (a) the amount you paid us in the prior 12 months and (b) US$10. We're not liable for indirect, incidental, or consequential damages.

8. Termination

You can stop using speakeasy any time by deleting the app or your account. We can terminate access to the service for cause (these terms broken, abuse reports substantiated) or for any reason with 14 days' notice — as long as the service continues to operate.

9. Governing law

These terms are governed by the law of the State of California, United States, without regard to conflict-of-law principles. Disputes go to the state or federal courts of San Francisco County, California — except small-claims, which can go to your local small- claims court.

10. Changes

We can update these terms; the update date at the top changes. If a change materially expands what we can do with your data or what behavior we forbid, we'll show a banner inside the app before the change takes effect.
